TD Garden Boston
August 13, 2023
As much as this piece is about me, it’s also about others that have come into my life, each at a unique time. A time that has brought me happiness, joy, friendship and support throughout this year and years past. A couple ‘old timers’ added in with a couple ‘newbies,’ this blog is for you! And to all four of you, thank you for making life so very interesting! – Rick

I wish I had the foresight to have gotten a photo of the crowd waiting outside of Boston’s ‘TD Garden’ as I walked up to the event last night for the Lionel Richie – Earth Wind and Fire concert. Below is a photo of the buildings entrance from frontofficesports.com. It’s tucked away in-between two buildings on either side, with steps leading up to the area itself. Even my own photos of last year’s visit do it no justice.

On arrival, folks were standing in clusters. Big clusters. Some looked like they had formed a line that would end before leading anywhere. I got in the end of one that appeared to have a lead. But eventually when we were allowed to walk up the steps, about a half hour after arriving, everyone seemed to do their own thing. You know the old saying, ‘When in Rome.’ I certainly don’t have all that ‘Boston Moxi,’ but when it comes to getting into a venue like this, they’re just like Detroiters. I shifted into ‘just do it’ mode. Detroit vs Everybody.
Actually, it wasn’t that bad. I just felt a need for some theatrics.

In front of me and below behind me.

I’m just now noticing how none of them look so happy. Maybe because I was laughing at the entire mess. I have my own demons, but knowing when to shut them off works wonders when I can manage.

My seat wasn’t that bad. Same level, different spot as Red Wings vs Bruins last October, where I was at center ice. I could look straight ahead and see the performances.
Then it happened. Earth Wind and Fire came out. I like their music but nowhere near the fan of them as Lionel. But boys and girls, they did put on a show for the first hour plus and were every bit of great as billed.
They did play for about an hour and a half, but I limited the songs I recorded so I wouldn’t drain my battery before Lionel hit the stage.
Then it was time for one of my all-time favorite performers to make his entrance.
I asked longtime friends Noi (@spicynoi11) • Instagram and Kristyn Burtt (@thekristynburtt) • Instagram what they’d like me to capture for them on video.
They’re not perfect, yet still enjoyable.
Notice: To avoid a blank ‘Video unavailable Watch on YouTube’ privacy announcement, I’ve just included their links.
Lionel immediately opened with ‘Hello’ so this is for you Noi! I know it’s always been ‘me you’re looking for.’
And for you Kristyn here’s ‘Easy,’ on this ‘Sunday morning.’
For my newest and equally cared for friends Jennifer 🪩 Real Mom of SFV (@realmomofsfv) • Instagram and Loren Reyes (@lorenreyez) • Instagram these are for you.
Jen, I was ready for some ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’ when I found out Lionel was playing the same time as my visit East. From one coast to the other this is for you.
Loren, your selection of Lionel’s ‘Stuck on You’ is by far my all-time favorite of any of his songs. I was more than happy recording it for you.
Over an hour and a half, Lionel played his best hits, made fun of Diana Ross never being on stage with him in 37 years and even hit on some of the older Commodore’s classics. From Nightshift, Lady, Sail On to Brick House, he rocked the house as if it he was still in his prime. His voice has changed a bit but now his showmanship. Definitely a night to be remembered for the ages.
