Friend ‘Molly Haze’, singer/songwriter, recently sent me a link to her newly released single. After listening to it, I had to know more.

She tells me the song was inspired by her reading of ‘Pedro Calderon de la Barca’s La vida est sueño ‘Life is a Dream’. The play was written as far back as 1630. It was first published in 1636. Its central themes are the conflict between free will and fate but, also, touch on dreams vs. reality and the conflict between father and son per Wikipedia.
What caught me were the opening lyrics. It begins “Play with me and I’ll play with you, just let me fix the rules of the game.” While the game, in question, being played is chess. Midway through the song, the chess set is burning. All too familiar and relatable for me, if you’ve read my blogs, you’ll agree!
Molly says the song is about “relationships in which illusions, lies and power games were prevalent.” And adds, “the text goes beyond the personal to explore a world that, as a literary and artistic person, has always fascinated, me: that of FICTION, of make-believe.”
The “I’ll play with you,” lyrics, reminds me of today’s era of relationships and the video even goes as far as showing her as a puppeteer pulling on the strings of someone she is dating.
Even before I could ask her what relationships in France are like (she was born and raised in Paris and still resides there) the songs writer said that the words are also contributed by “personal relationships.”
“Just let me fix the rules” is as problematic as this generations so called ‘boundaries’ that can change in an instant and end a friendship, relationship or marriage in a split second, when questioned about even the smallest of issues.
“I wanted to show how thin the limit between, on the one hand, the world of lies, fiction and make-believe. And on the other hand, what we consider to be reality, is in fact. But the difficulty we can experience in trying to identify truth is not systematically negative,” Molly added and then continued. “I denounce and celebrate at the same time the power of fiction and lying envisaging life as a giant game of illusions between lovers who try to get the upper hand.”
Fiction has a nice rhythm and is very thought provoking. With today’s lifestyle changes where relationships and marriages are bouncing around more than a basketball on the court, it will definitely give one insight on things to ponder.
