My Vote Goes to Ric Olié

“In a galaxy far, far away, democracy apparently still exists—at least long enough for Emperor Palpatine to announce open elections for a new Emperor. His nominee? Darth Vader. My nominee? Ric Olié.”

Ric Olié, Queen Amidala's pilot from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, sits at the controls of a spacecraft, focused on operating the ship's navigation systems.

Yes, that Ric Olié

For those who may need a refresher, Ric Olié was Queen Amidala’s pilot in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. He wasn’t a Jedi nor a politician. And certainly, wasn’t a Sith Lord.

Instead, he was a skilled pilot who remained calm under pressure while the galaxy around him seemed determined to fall apart.

And honestly, that sounds like exactly the kind of leader I’d want.

Darth Vader‘s résumé is certainly impressive if you’re looking for someone with experience in intimidation, dramatic entrances, and an unfortunate habit of resolving disagreements through Force choking. But leadership is about more than power. It’s about character.

Ric Olié demonstrated something we don’t often celebrate enough: quiet competence.

He did his job well. He stayed focused during crises. He protected those entrusted to his care. He never sought the spotlight, yet he played an important role when it mattered most.

In a world—whether fictional or real—that often rewards the loudest voices and biggest personalities, I’ve come to appreciate the people who simply show up, do the work, and help others along the way.

Over the past few years, as I’ve navigated heart disease, cancer treatments, and the everyday challenges that come with them, I’ve learned that some of life’s greatest heroes aren’t superheroes at all. They’re nurses, physician assistants, friends, family members, and countless others who quietly keep us moving forward.

They’re the Ric Oliés of our world.

Would Ric Olié defeat Darth Vader in an election? Probably not. The Empire doesn’t exactly have a stellar record when it comes to fair elections. Still, I like to imagine a campaign centered on hope, competence, and service rather than fear and absolute power.

His campaign slogan?

“A Steady Hand in the Cockpit. A Steady Hand for the Empire.”

And perhaps his first executive order would be simple:

“No more Death Stars until we fix the infrastructure.”

The galaxy could do worse.

Actually, it already did.

My vote goes to Ric Olié.

Who would you nominate to challenge Darth Vader?

Ben Edits: Vader famously told Luke, “I am your father.” So technically, Skywalker, he’s your father too. 🫣

P.S. Sorry, Skywalker. It’s nothing personal—I just prefer pilots over Sith Lords. Besides, with a name like Ollie/Olié, I may have been biased from the beginning. May the Force be with you. 😄
