My take on the movie hit of the year

When someone asks, if it were true, that you were friends with the Wicked Witch during a celebration of her death and can only reminisce about her good …

Elphaba’s Story

After an affair by her mother, Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, is born green skinned. She is shunned from her family and is cared for by animals. Later her parents have Nessarose (Marissa Bode), another daughter, we learn who is paraplegic.

Elphaba later admits she’s to blame for her sister’s condition. As her mother consumed some crazy plants throughout her pregnancy that caused it. rather than risk another green child.

Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh), discovers Elphaba’s powers while she’s sending Nessarose off to Shiz University with their father. She allows Elphaba entrance to the school as well and offers to tutor her. It is there she meets Glinda, played by Ariana Grande.

Glinda the Real Evil

I saw through Glinda right from the start. Vile, conniving a real user whose own intent is self-gratification. She shares her dorm room with Elphaba after inadvertently telling Madame Morrible she would. During the night of a party, Glinda gives Elphaba a witch’s hat. It was made by her grandmother and given as an ugly prank to Elphaba.

Meeting Oz

Elphaba gets an invitation to meet the Mighty Oz, played by Jeff Goldblum. In a real meaning of friendship, she tells Glinda to jump aboard the tram and join her.

Upon arrival they learn Oz’s Palace is guarded by apes. Elphaba is then coerced into reading a spell from a book that gives the apes wings. She was tricked by Oz because he can’t read and wants to use them to control the animals. Some of which are teachers at Shiz and had recently been fired and have disappeared. Including Dr Dillamond (Peter Dinklage) an instructor at the college.

After their discovery the escape begins, and they run through the palace. Having been sent by Madame Morriable, they were attacked by the apes that had grown wings and can now fly.

One more spell cast by Elphaba, from the magic book, turned a broom into every witches need. A flying broom. It was there she showed her true friendship again. She implored Glinda to come along so they could work together to make things right. Yet she stayed behind and was embraced by Madame Morriable.

Defying Gravity

… then you are truly the ‘Wicked’ one

I absolutely loved ‘Wicked.’ The plot, the singing, the performances were all excellent. Spell binding and long at two hours and forty minutes but well worth every minute.

A definite must see and two thumbs up. Can’t wait for part two next Thanksgiving.
