A Day at Greenfield Village, a Game of 1867 Baseball, and the Beginning of Something More<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Had I not just hung up the phone with their daughter, I would have wondered if something had happened to her when a few moments later her parents number flashed up ringing on my cell. It was Lumi’s voice, her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a few pleasantries, she said they’d seen Maya’s photos from The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. They wanted to see it for themselves and added the best guide would be the one their daughter loves. She then asked if I’d like to go too. Adding there would be an ‘Old Timers Baseball game’ being played as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I said yes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the abundance of inland lakes Michigan likes to brag about, the couple retired here four years ago from their native Boston. That was a full year before I ever crossed paths with their daughter, Maya, aboard the subway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lumi was a middle school teacher while Mika was a college professor who taught history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Was I Thinkin’?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I woke up this morning with the song \u201cWhat Was I Thinkin’\u201d<\/strong> running through my head. After agreeing to go to Greenfield Village with Lumi and Mika, I suddenly wondered if I’d lost my mind agreeing to go alone with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sure, the grilling of dating their only child had happened at just about every encounter we’d had during the long weekends I had spent with Maya at their home while she was visiting Michigan. But this was different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, it would be me and her parents. Alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would they ask?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They had already questioned me about several of the blogs I’ve written, my children, others that I have loved, my upbringing as well as political views. So, what could possibly be next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That thought crossed my mind as I sat there drinking this morning’s coffee before getting ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was I thinkin’?<\/strong> And just like that, what had sounded like a simple invitation to spend the day at Greenfield Village and watch an Old Timers baseball game suddenly felt a little more like an interview I hadn’t prepared for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had no idea what questions were coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
