Not poetic. Not mystical. Just inevitable&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn\u2019t ask for heart disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn&#8217;t choose an ICD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn\u2019t choose ablations, cardioversions or operating rooms <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn\u2019t choose a colectomy and the months it took to recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn\u2019t choose Lupron injections and PSA tests after my prostate cancer treatment failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those weren\u2019t forks in the road where I was allowed to weigh options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are the realities that arrived uninvited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Certain chapters feel written&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Not by the stars or some cosmic force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But by biology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By circumstance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the fragile architecture of the human body that sometimes requires intervention to keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Yet other parts of my life&#8230; <\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don\u2019t feel inevitable at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love didn\u2019t feel inevitable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staying didn\u2019t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing didn&#8217;t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choosing to speak openly about illness and lost love instead of shrinking into it, wasn\u2019t fate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was a decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/o8pQLtHTPaI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=es-MX&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Brandi Carlile: The Story<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>I don\u2019t get to edit my diagnosis&#8230;<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t get to revise the pathology report. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I do get to decide whether I stay who I am in the eyes of others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I get to decide that my PSA does not define me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I get to decide that loss becomes depth and a source of love instead of bitterness and hate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t see fate as a script with every line already written. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe I believe in ownership after the fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Life handed me certain chapters&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some feel unavoidable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some feel like timing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some feel like mistakes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Once they happen&#8230; <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They become part of my story and that story matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>If there is destiny&#8230; <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it isn\u2019t about what happens to me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it\u2019s about who I choose to be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it all happened to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>So, you tell me, do I believe in fate or destiny?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Consider making a small donation (I sure could use it) to help keep my website afloat at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/paypal.me\/justmeric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JustMeRic<\/a>.
